CBD Gummies vs THC Gummies vs Vijaya Gummies: 2027 Guide

What is the difference between CBD and THC gummies?

CBD gummies are built around cannabidiol, which is non-intoxicating. THC gummies are built around tetrahydrocannabinol, the compound that can cause a high. Vijaya gummies are Ayurvedic products made from cannabis leaf extract, which naturally contains both in measured amounts.

The short version

Search for cannabis gummies in India and you will see three labels used almost interchangeably: CBD gummies, THC gummies and Vijaya gummies. They are not the same thing.

They contain different compounds, they feel different, and — most importantly for anyone in India — they sit in very different places under the law.

Three kinds of cannabis gummies, in one line each

Search for cannabis gummies in India and you will see three labels used almost interchangeably: CBD gummies, THC gummies and Vijaya gummies. They are not the same thing.

They contain different compounds, they feel different, and — most importantly for anyone in India — they sit in very different places under the law.

This guide, updated for 2027, explains what each type is, how THC and CBD differ in plain words, what Indian law actually says, how to read a gummy label, and how to approach dosing safely with a doctor.

It is written to help you make an informed choice, not to sell you a particular product.

The word 'gummy' tells you only about the format. What matters is the source of the extract, how much of each cannabinoid is in every piece, who made it, and under which licence. If you are new to the herb itself, start with our explainer on what Vijaya is.

  • CBD gummies — gummies made with cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound from the cannabis plant. Depending on how they are made, they may contain only CBD or CBD with other plant compounds.
  • THC gummies — gummies made mainly for their tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, the compound behind the 'high'. In other countries these are often recreational products made from cannabis flower.
  • Vijaya gummies — Ayurvedic gummies made with an extract of the cannabis leaf (Vijaya), which naturally carries both THC and CBD, usually blended with other Ayurvedic herbs and made by an AYUSH-licensed manufacturer.

THC vs CBD: the difference in plain words

The cannabis plant produces natural compounds called cannabinoids. THC and CBD are the two best known. Both interact with the body's endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors involved in things like mood, sleep, appetite and how we sense discomfort. They do so in different ways, which is why they feel different.

THC is psychoactive. In larger amounts it can cause intoxication — a change in perception, mood and coordination.

In small, measured amounts within a medicine, it may contribute to a sense of relaxation and help support rest, but it can also cause drowsiness, dry mouth, a faster heartbeat or feeling unsettled, particularly for first-time users.

CBD is non-intoxicating. It does not produce a high on its own, and it is the cannabinoid most studied for calm and general wellbeing. Research is emerging and results vary between individuals, so it is best thought of as something that may help support a calmer routine rather than a guaranteed effect.

Products that contain both are common in Ayurveda, because the Vijaya leaf naturally contains both. Some people believe the two work better together — an idea known as the entourage effect, explained in our guide to full-spectrum vs broad-spectrum vs isolate. The research there is still developing.

Are THC gummies legal in India?

This is the question most people are really asking, and the honest answer is: it depends entirely on what the gummy is made from and how it is supplied.

The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 defines cannabis as charas (the resin), ganja (the flowering or fruiting tops) and mixtures of these. Producing, possessing, selling or using charas and ganja for recreational purposes is illegal in India and carries serious penalties.

A recreational 'THC gummy' made from flower or resin — the kind sold openly in some other countries — falls on the wrong side of that law, and importing one is not a loophole.

The NDPS definition expressly excludes the leaves and seeds when they are not accompanied by the tops. Ayurvedic medicines made from the leaf (Vijaya) are therefore governed by the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and its rules for Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani drugs.

They must be made by a manufacturer holding an AYUSH licence, properly labelled, and taken under medical supervision with a valid prescription.

Hemp-seed products are different again. Hemp seeds and hemp seed oil contain little to no cannabinoids and are generally sold as food or cosmetic ingredients.

A 'hemp gummy' made with seed oil is not the same as a CBD or Vijaya gummy, so do not assume one tells you anything about the other. For more detail, read is cannabis oil legal in India and AYUSH vs non-AYUSH CBD.

This table is a general summary for India. It is not legal advice, and rules can be interpreted differently from state to state, so always check the specific product's licence and talk to a doctor.

How to read a cannabis gummy label

A good label answers your questions before you have to ask them. Here is what to look for on any CBD or Vijaya gummy in 2027.

  • Amount per gummy — the label should state the extract or cannabinoid content in each piece, in milligrams, as a percentage, or both. Note whether the number refers to the whole extract or to a specific cannabinoid such as THC or CBD; these are not the same thing.
  • Licence number — an Ayurvedic Vijaya product should show the manufacturer's AYUSH manufacturing licence number, the issuing state, and the manufacturer's name and address. Calmosis products are made under AYUSH Licence Nos. MP25E/23/1117 & MP25D/55/96 (Madhya Pradesh AYUSH Department).
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA) — ask for a batch-specific lab report from an identifiable laboratory, with a batch number matching your pack. It should show cannabinoid content and screening for contaminants.
  • Full ingredient list — every herb and additive named, not a vague 'herbal blend'. Check the base (gelatin or plant-based pectin), sugar and allergens.
  • Batch, manufacturing and expiry dates — plus a caution such as 'to be taken under medical supervision'.
  • No disease claims — a responsible label will not promise to cure anxiety, sleep problems or pain. Consider that kind of claim a red flag.

Dosing: start low, go slow — with a doctor

Gummies are digested before they take effect, so they usually act more slowly than an oil taken under the tongue. As a general guide, effects from an oral cannabis extract may take 60 to 90 minutes to begin.

The most common mistake is taking a second gummy because the first 'did nothing' — and then feeling too much once both arrive.

The safer approach is to start with the lowest amount your doctor suggests, wait, note how you feel, and adjust only with medical advice. Take your first dose at home, at a time when you do not need to drive, work with machinery or make important decisions.

Keep a simple note of the time, amount and how you felt the next day; it makes your follow-up consultation far more useful.

Your doctor will also ask about your health history and current medicines, because cannabinoids may interact with sedatives, blood thinners, antidepressants and other prescriptions. This is not paperwork for its own sake — it is the reason Indian law asks for medical supervision.

Our gummy buying guide covers more of the practical checks.

Who should not take cannabis gummies

  • Not for anyone under 18, or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Not recommended if you have a heart condition or diabetes, unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery after taking a Vijaya product — it may affect coordination and reaction time.
  • Possible side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth and changes in appetite.
  • Vijaya may interact with sedatives and sleeping pills, blood thinners, antidepressants and some other prescription medicines — tell your doctor everything you take.
  • Avoid combining it with alcohol.

Frequently asked questions about CBD vs THC gummies

Are THC gummies legal in India in 2027?

Recreational THC gummies made from cannabis flower or resin are illegal under the NDPS Act, 1985. Ayurvedic Vijaya gummies made from the leaf by an AYUSH-licensed manufacturer are legal when taken with a valid prescription under medical supervision.

Are CBD gummies legal in India?

It depends on how the product is made and licensed. Leaf-based CBD and Vijaya products sold as AYUSH medicines are legal with a prescription. Check for an AYUSH licence number and a batch lab report before buying. See AYUSH vs non-AYUSH CBD.

Do Vijaya gummies make you high?

Vijaya leaf contains some THC, so a large enough amount may be intoxicating. Licensed gummies contain measured amounts, and your doctor will suggest a dose suited to you. Start low, wait before taking more, and do not drive after use.

Are hemp gummies the same as CBD gummies?

Not necessarily. Gummies made with hemp seed or hemp seed oil contain little to no cannabinoids and are food products. CBD and Vijaya gummies are made from plant extracts that carry cannabinoids. Read the ingredient list carefully.

How long do cannabis gummies take to work?

Because they are digested first, oral cannabis products may take around 60 to 90 minutes to begin working, and this varies from person to person. Do not take a second gummy just because you feel nothing at first; follow your doctor's advice.

Do I need a prescription for Vijaya gummies?

Yes. Vijaya medicines for oral use should be taken under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner. Every Calmosis order includes a free consultation with an AYUSH-licensed doctor.

Can cannabis gummies cure anxiety or sleep problems?

No. Vijaya may help support calm and rest as part of a healthy routine, and research is emerging, but it is not a cure for any condition and does not replace medical or mental-health care. Ask the doctor about your specific concern.

Talk to an AYUSH doctor before you start

Vijaya medicines are sold on prescription. Every Calmosis order includes a free online consultation with an AYUSH-licensed doctor, who checks whether a product suits you, how much to take and whether it could interact with anything you already use.
