What is the difference between full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD?Full-spectrum extracts keep the plant's range of cannabinoids, including THC, along with terpenes. Broad-spectrum extracts keep CBD and many other compounds but have THC removed or reduced to very low levels.

Article at a glance

## The short version

Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate are three words you will see on almost every CBD or cannabis oil label. They describe how much of the original plant is kept in the extract — and that changes what is in the bottle, how it may feel, and whether it contains THC.

## The three extract types, defined

Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate are three words you will see on almost every CBD or cannabis oil label. They describe how much of the original plant is kept in the extract — and that changes what is in the bottle, how it may feel, and whether it contains THC.

This guide, updated for 2027, explains each term in plain words, what the 'entourage effect' really means (and what the research does and does not show), how THC content affects legal status in India, how to check a Certificate of Analysis, and which Calmosis products fall into which category.

Every cannabis extract starts with plant material that contains many natural compounds: cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, aromatic compounds called terpenes, and plant pigments and flavonoids. The extraction and refining process decides how many of these make it into the final product.

- Full-spectrum — the extract keeps the broad range of compounds found in the plant, including THC, CBD, minor cannabinoids and terpenes, in roughly their natural proportions. Ayurvedic Vijaya leaf extracts are typically full-spectrum.
- Broad-spectrum — the extract keeps CBD and many other plant compounds, but THC is removed or reduced to very low levels during refining.
- CBD isolate — a highly refined form in which CBD is separated from everything else. The result is close to pure CBD, with no other cannabinoids or terpenes.

## The entourage effect: a hypothesis, not a promise

The 'entourage effect' is the idea that cannabis compounds may work better together than on their own — for example, that CBD may moderate some effects of THC, or that terpenes may shape the overall experience. It is the main reason people choose full-spectrum products.

It is worth being clear about where the science stands. The entourage effect is a hypothesis. Some laboratory and early clinical research is consistent with it, but research is still emerging, the findings are mixed, and it has not been firmly established in people.

Be cautious of any label or website that presents it as proven fact.

Ayurveda reaches a similar idea from a different direction. Classical formulations rarely use a herb on its own; Vijaya is traditionally combined with other herbs and processed with care.

That is a traditional principle rather than a clinical finding, but it explains why Ayurvedic manufacturers tend to favour whole-leaf, full-spectrum extracts blended with companion herbs such as ashwagandha and brahmi.

## THC content and legal status in India

Because full-spectrum extracts contain THC, people often ask whether a full spectrum cannabis oil is legal in India. The answer depends on the part of the plant and the licence, not on the word 'full-spectrum'.

The NDPS Act, 1985 prohibits recreational use of ganja (flowering tops) and charas (resin) and excludes the leaves and seeds from its definition of cannabis. Ayurvedic medicines made from the leaf (Vijaya) — including full-spectrum leaf extracts that naturally contain THC — are regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

They are legal when made by an AYUSH-licensed manufacturer and taken with a valid prescription under medical supervision.

Broad-spectrum and isolate products contain little or no THC, but that does not automatically make every such product legitimate. The same questions apply: who made it, under which licence, and is there a lab report? A CBD isolate in India should still come from an identifiable, licensed source.

Read [AYUSH vs non-AYUSH CBD](/blog/ayush-vs-non-ayush-cbd/) for how to verify a licence, and our [legal explainer on cannabis oil](/blog/is-cannabis-oil-legal-in-india-latest-ayush-regulations-2026/) for more detail.

## How to check a Certificate of Analysis (COA)

The only reliable way to know whether a product is full-spectrum, broad-spectrum or isolate is to look at its lab report. Ask the seller for a batch-specific COA and check these points.

- Lab name and contact details — the report should come from an identifiable, independent laboratory, not just the brand's own letterhead.
- Batch number — it should match the batch printed on your bottle or pack.
- Cannabinoid profile — look for THC and CBD values, and any minor cannabinoids. A full-spectrum product should show several cannabinoids; an isolate should show CBD and essentially nothing else.
- Contaminant screening — results for heavy metals, pesticides, residual solvents and microbes, where tested.
- Date of testing — recent enough to be relevant to the batch you are buying.
- Consistency with the label — the numbers on the COA should match what the label claims. If they do not, ask why.

## Which Calmosis products are full-spectrum?

All Calmosis products for people are Ayurvedic Vijaya formulations made under AYUSH Licence Nos. MP25E/23/1117 & MP25D/55/96 (Madhya Pradesh AYUSH Department), and are third-party or lab tested. Here is how they map to the categories above.

- [Green Mantra](/shop/green-mantra/) — a 100% pure cannabis leaf extract with a full-spectrum THC+CBD profile, made in the Ayurvedic tradition to help support calm, rest and everyday wellbeing.
- [Peace Mantra](/shop/peace-mantra/) — 20% Vijaya leaf extract carrying THC, CBD and supporting cannabinoids, blended with honey, valerian root, brahmi and ashwagandha in an olive-oil base.
- [Sleep Mantra](/shop/sleep-mantra/) — a CBD-rich 10% Vijaya leaf extract with honey, valerian root, brahmi and ashwagandha, taken once in the evening to help support restful sleep. It is non-habit forming.
- [Dog Mantra](/shop/dog-mantra/) — a THC-free CBD oil made specifically for dogs. It is not a full-spectrum product and should never be swapped with human products, or vice versa. See our [pet range](/shop/pets/).

## Common myths about extract types

- 'Full-spectrum is always stronger.' Not necessarily. Strength depends on how much extract and how many milligrams of each cannabinoid are in a dose, not on the word on the label. Always compare the stated amounts.
- 'Isolate is always safer.' An isolate avoids THC, but it still needs to be made by a licensed manufacturer, tested for contaminants and taken with the same care around medicines and health conditions.
- 'Broad-spectrum means zero THC.' Broad-spectrum products aim for very low or no THC, but the only way to know is the batch lab report.
- 'Hemp seed oil is full-spectrum CBD.' Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds and contains little to no cannabinoids. It is a food ingredient, not a cannabinoid extract.
- 'More compounds means a guaranteed result.' The entourage effect is still a hypothesis. Results vary between individuals, which is why a doctor-guided, start-low approach matters.

## Choosing between them: practical pointers

There is no single 'best' extract type. A sensible choice depends on your health, your goals and how you respond — which is why the decision belongs in a conversation with a doctor rather than on a product page.

- If you want a traditional, whole-leaf Ayurvedic extract and your doctor agrees it suits you, a full-spectrum Vijaya oil is the most common option in India. Browse [Vijaya oils](/shop/vijaya-oil/).
- If you prefer a pre-measured, discreet format, ask the doctor about [Vijaya gummies](/shop/vijaya-gummies/); our [gummy buying guide](/blog/how-to-choose-vijaya-gummies/) explains what to check.
- If you must avoid THC entirely — for example because of workplace testing — tell your doctor, as full-spectrum products are not suitable for you.
- Whatever you choose, start low, go slow, take your first dose at home, and wait before taking more. Sublingual oils typically act faster than gummies.
- Compare brands on licence, lab reports and labelling, not on marketing language. Our guide to [choosing a CBD brand in India](/blog/best-cbd-brands-in-india/) offers a neutral checklist.

## Safety: who should avoid full-spectrum extracts

Full-spectrum extracts contain THC, so these cautions matter even more. Please read them before you consider any Vijaya product.

- Not for anyone under 18, or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Not recommended if you have a heart condition or diabetes, unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise.
- Do not drive or operate machinery after taking a Vijaya product — it may affect coordination and reaction time.
- Possible side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth and changes in appetite.
- Vijaya may interact with sedatives and sleeping pills, blood thinners, antidepressants and some other prescription medicines — tell your doctor everything you take.
- Avoid combining it with alcohol.

## Frequently asked questions about full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate

What is CBD isolate?CBD isolate is a highly refined form of CBD with all other cannabinoids, terpenes and plant compounds removed. It contains no THC and is close to pure CBD.

Is the entourage effect proven? No. The entourage effect — the idea that cannabis compounds work better together — is a hypothesis. Some early research is consistent with it, but research is still emerging and it has not been firmly established in people.

Is full spectrum cannabis oil legal in India?Full-spectrum oils made from the cannabis leaf (Vijaya) by an AYUSH-licensed manufacturer are regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and are legal with a valid prescription under medical supervision. Products made from flowers or resin for recreational use are illegal under the NDPS Act, 1985.

Does full-spectrum CBD oil make you high?Full-spectrum extracts contain some THC, so a large enough dose may be intoxicating. Licensed Vijaya oils are taken in small, measured amounts on a doctor's advice. Start low, and do not drive or operate machinery after use.

Which Calmosis oils are full-spectrum?Green Mantra is a full-spectrum THC+CBD leaf extract, and Peace Mantra contains 20% Vijaya extract with THC and CBD. Sleep Mantra is a CBD-rich Vijaya extract. Dog Mantra is THC-free and made only for dogs.

How do I know if a product is really full-spectrum?Check its batch-specific Certificate of Analysis from an independent lab. A full-spectrum product should list several cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, and the batch number should match your pack.

Which is better for me: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum or isolate? It depends on your health, your medicines and whether you need to avoid THC. Ask the doctor — every Calmosis order includes a free consultation with an AYUSH-licensed doctor who can guide you.

## Talk to an AYUSH doctor before you start

Vijaya medicines are sold on prescription. Every Calmosis order includes a free online consultation with an AYUSH-licensed doctor, who checks whether a product suits you, how much to take and whether it could interact with anything you already use.
